Blind Spots

by Pastor Holly Johnson

As I was traveling down the interstate last week, suddenly a car pulled over into my lane. I had to leave the road to avoid being hit. I know that the angels of God were there to keep us from having a major accident. What caused that car to pull over into my lane? I was in his blind spot. Somewhere between the rearview mirror and the rear quarter panel of your car there is a space that is quite small, yet it is capable of hiding an eighteen wheeler from view until it is right on top of you. In driver’s education we were taught to pay careful attention to the blind spot. When we fail to check our blind spots, the results can be deadly.

In thinking about that near miss, I realized that most all of us as individuals have blind spots in our lives. Blind spots are the parts of ourselves that we cannot see, but others can see quite clearly. The blind spots are often tied to our pasts. It can be painful to sort through certain emotions and feelings. Therefore, we often choose the paths of blindness, like avoidance or victimization. Sometimes we feel that we have no choice in some of the bad decisions that we make. We “blindly” walk into those failures feeling powerless to change our circumstances. Denial of our blind sports can bring death or destruction to our lives…. either emotionally or spiritually.

We need to trust in the Lord enough to allow Him to illuminate the dark areas of our lives and to give us “sight” in the areas that we are blind. God will direct our paths and bring healing to our lives if we only allow Him to. He will eliminate our blind spots!! “And I will lead the blind by a way they do not know, in paths they do not know I will guide them. I will make darkness into light before them and rugged places into plains. These are the things I will do. And I will not leave them undone.” (Isaiah 42:16)
